This Podcast (above) is a tribute to Elena and others who have faced similar difficulties in their old age. It also summarizes and analyzes the problems that many older people encounter in today's society. Some of these problems include the options of nursing homes, assisted living, and home care and the rights of older people who want to remain and die at home if they are mentally sound. Many older people are afraid of being sent to a nursing home. They may feel they are losing their independence, self-esteem, and personal choices. If you have to decide whether to place your loved one in a nursing home, consider it carefully. You should also include your loved one in the decision-making process as much as possible, as long as they can communicate their preferences and needs. Being old does not mean losing one's dignity or self-determination; respect your loved one's views and feelings. Gigi Gilbert
