About Something Good to Eat!
Eat grapes regularly and you may never get cancer (Article from Netscape news)
A research team at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign has determined that components in grapes, including some that have been newly identified, work together to dramatically inhibit an enzyme crucial to the proliferation of cancer cells.
The study, which was done using advanced molecular tools with grape-cell cultures, helps to identify which flavonoids in grapes and red wine are most responsible for anti-cancer qualities. Flavonoids are a group of chemical compounds naturally found in certain fruits, vegetables, teas, wines, nuts, seeds, and roots; they have been shown to prevent or slow the development of some cancers. Flavonoids are more abundant in red grapes than in white grapes.
What is most exciting about this study is that the researchers not only found a dozen new constituents in grape-cell culture extracts, but also identified how some of them work synergistically against an enzyme that is necessary for the spread of cancer. "The findings add to the argument for eating whole foods," study co-author Elvira Gonzalez de Mejia, a professor in the department of food science and human nutrition, said in a news release announcing the study findings. "It's very clear that the synergy is critical. When a cell becomes malignant, that enzyme is expressed 300 times more than in a normal cell. If we can find a compound or mixture of compounds that can reduce the activity of that enzyme, the cancerous cells will die."
Eventually, researchers will be able to identify a reasonable dosage of grapes that we should eat to help prevent cancer. "By eating the fruit, we know that the bioactive component involved goes into your bloodstream and relocates to other regions," de Mejia explained. "Before now, we didn't really know that."
The research study was published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.
